2005 Regional Finals2005 Chinook Team Cattle Penning Regional Finals Willow Creek Ag Society played host the Chinook Team Cattle Penning Regional Finals in Claresholm Alberta September 17th and 18th, 2005. 450 teams competed for $31,000 in cash and prizes. With that many teams you could bet that the action was fast and furious with so many prizes on the line. The format for the regional finals were, Saturday was the first go and half back of the open class, first and second go of the Youth classes and first go and half back of the 7 class. Sunday schedule was busier with the first go and half back of the 10 class, first go and half back of the 5 class and then it was onto the finals, which were the top ten in each class. Fresh cattle were brought in for the top ten and it was quite exciting with the following teams being at the top of their game. First place in the open class went to Scott Cressman, his father Larry Cressman and Jim Szuzskiel winning in a time on 9 head of 76.17. Scott was riding a 7-year-old granddaughter of Solanas Peppy San that he has been riding for 4 years. Larry rode Jenny, a 6 year old mare that he says is the best horse he has ever ridden and Jim rode Sans Pipalena an 8 year old mare that has won over $20,000 for Jim. First place in the ten class went to Ron Scott, Suzie Emms and Rick Dalton with a winning time on 9 head of 106.53. Ron rode 8-year-old Shooter who is extremely athletic and a lot of horse. Suzie rode Levi aka Lovey, a 9 year old gelding that she hasn’t found anything that she doesn’t like about him and Rick rode Casey a six year old gelding that has the greatest mane and tail and really thinks he is a dog as he likes to walk into the garage and would probably walk into the house should the opportunity arise. First place in the 7 class went to the team of Kurt Robson, Tova Place and Kirk Cottrell in a time of 108.64 on 9 head of cattle. Kirk was riding Stinky his 6 year old gelding that Kirk says is much smarter than the owner in the game of cattle penning. The 5 class was won in a time of 125.83 on 9 head of cows by the team of Jeff Diegel, Tony Distefano and Linda Mathiesen. Jeff was riding Holly his 6 year old mare that he has dubbed the energizer bunny for her ability to just keep going and Linda rode Buffalo Bean, a 7 year old Palomino owned by her son Kevin and his wife Heather. “Molly”, her barn name is no stranger to the winners’ circle as she carried Linda’s husband Greg to first place in the 9 class at the 2004 USTPA World Finals. Liam Greer and Cory Bond won the Junior Youth division with a time of 96.62 on 6 head. Cory was riding Kip an 8-year-old mare and what he likes about her is how fast she goes and the great rollbacks she does. Senior youth champions were and all girl team. Go girls! The team consisted of Samantha Hamilton, Kathryn Smith and Darquise Beauchesne. They penned 6 head in a time of 102.75. Samantha rode Deck, a 13-year-old sorrel quarter horse that she likes to ride because he can do anything. Kathryn rode Stetson a 7 year old gelding, like Samantha’s horse is an all-round horse that can do it all and Darquise rode her 8 year old mare Brandy. Saddles were given to the individual riders that achieved the most points. Really nice saddles! Those winners were; The Open class Crissy Santangelo, the 10 class Matt Manley, the 7 class Kirk Cottrell and the 5 class Bonnie Osland.
